Our facility is a combined tower/TRACON, or up/down. That is,
the controllers work both in the control tower and the radar approach control.
Our facility is located at the Mahlon Sweet Airport (Also known as "The
Eugene Airport."), just northwest of the city of Eugene, Oregon. Eugene is
located at the southern end of the Willamette valley, and boasts a population of
around 250,000 for the greater Eugene-Springfield area.
While only one facility, we use two distinct radio call signs. While working in the tower we use "Eugene Tower" or "Eugene Ground", but while working in the radar room we use "Cascade Approach" or "Cascade Departure". The separate call sign for the radar room is due to the fact that not only do we provide approach control services at and around the Eugene airport, but also at and around the Medford airport 105 miles south of Eugene. The data from the radar antenna at Medford, as well as the radio and landline communications, are sent via microwave to Eugene.
Current staffing at Eugene, an ATC 7 facility (Level III under the old classification system.), is: the manager, one staff specialist, three supervisors, and 25 controllers; as well as associated maintenance personnel. Like many air traffic control facilities we usually are not fully staffed.
We have an on-line photo album, if you'd like to see what our facility looks like.
